From Google to Facebook to Apple, the best ideas tend to be remarkably simple in their concept. The very same can also be said for Clips4Sale.com. It is the number one downloadable amateur fetish and porn clip site on the web and it’s the kind of idea you wish you’d had yourself. It has single-handedly revolutionized the fetish and porn industry, and continues to have the kind of traffic that rival copycat sites can only dream of. The story of Clips4Sale is one that has fascinated this writer for quite some time, so when the opportunity came to talk to Neil, the brains behind the entire operation, we naturally grabbed it with both hands!
Ok so the first question. The story of Clips4Sale is an intriguing one – especially for people who are unfamiliar with the fetish industry. When I heard of Clips4Sale a few years ago it really opened my eyes to a world that I didn’t really know much about, and I don’t just mean the fetish world, but the ‘clip’ world also. C4S was born from a fetish, your fetish. Can you tell us how it all started, how you came up with the idea, was it a lightbulb moment? And what was the industry like before Clips4Sale, was there even an industry?
So back in 1998 I found IRC chat for the first time and was amazed at how many people out there had a foot fetish. As you can imagine admitting you have a fetish for girls feet is not something you run around singing out loud. So I was in the closet about this since the early age of around 6 or 7yrs old. After discovering IRC chat and a room called #feet I was in my happy place. I met many wonderful and interesting people in there and even still have a friendship with several of them. So one girl I met had her own membership site about her and her feet, she was making a few thousand dollars a month and I asked her if she would do a joint venture with me on a new site. She agreed and Extremefeet.com was born. I was the photographer and she built and maintained the site. I was at the time working for my parents and wanted more out of life so I worked very hard finding models to do non nude foot photo shoots. At the time video was not really the big thing due to the internet being so slow so I focused on what other foot fetish sites were doing which was pics of girls feet in various outfits and poses. After a few months of doing this I decided to pack my bags and relocate to Florida since the weather was better needed a change of scenery. After being in Florida working for my parents still do on the road sales I kept shooting models for extremefeet. I dabbled a bit in video as well and started making short 30 sec clips for the members of my site. One fan used to email me about making a custom created video just for him, he would provide the script and choose the model and I would film it and ship him a VHS tape. At the time VHS was the way to go and after 6 or 7 custom orders the guy asked if I could upload the clip to a server for him to download it. This was a pain to do but I found a way and he was very happy and continued to order custom clips over several months. After I had over 30 of these clips sitting around doing nothing I thought to myself – I wonder if anyone else with a foot fetish would buy these. This is the moment the idea for Clips4sale.com happened. I uploaded all of the clips to a server and had a web page built and bought the domain Extremefeetclips.com, this was the first ever version of what has become Clips4sale. So at the time in early 2001-2002 the internet was littered with membership sites, nobody was doing pay per download sites at all. So while still working on the road for my parents I would receive orders for the clips daily, after a while it started making more money than I was earning with my sales job and that’s when I said I have to devote everything to this new idea and run with it. So I thought to myself, I wonder if there are other foot fetish producers out there who would shoot clips and sell them on my Extremefeetclips site. I would pay them a commission and we would both make money with the traffic I was already starting to build. I emailed dozens of producers about this new innovative idea. Some thought I was crazy and that this would never work and some took the chance, after all it wasn’t costing them anything to try. Once I had 10-20 producers contributing content to my site a few of them asked if they could add other fetish material like Tickling. I said well why not…we can always try it and see what happens. At this time there was too much work to do manually to keep this running and I decided in 2003 to buy the name Clips4Sale.com. I had a new site built that was fully automated and my job was to handle all support for producers and customers as well as advertising, and going out to find more people with content. I was a one man machine and loved it. Oh and on top of this I was still shooting content for extremefeet and meeting new models each week. Some of these models also liked my idea and decided to try it themselves and open a store with me and sell their own clips. It was all going ok and I didn’t have a ton of money to spend on advertising so I took my last $2000 and placed an ad on thehun.com – that $2000 turned into $8000 and I did it again and again and again while finding other sources of paid traffic. I actually had the opportunity in 2015 to meet the owners of the hun and gave them a big hug and told them that they helped me build a giant in the industry. So after things started going up and up and more and more producers were hearing about this new site with a brand new idea they knew they wanted to be a part of it. I added category after category and grew the list to over 1000 over the course of 14 years. Things really took off in 2005-2006 when I stopped shooting content myself and solely focused on Clips4sale. I worked night and day, barely slept and continued to handle customer and studio support. I hired a few people after it was just too much and we slowly built up a team of over 40 people to this day. The hardest part of all this was convincing producers who were hell bent on the membership site platform to give this new and innovative idea a chance. I told them simply – why not sell a clip for $5.99 to dozens of people instead of giving away all your content for a monthly fee. This was the main idea of the site. I knew people would make more money selling individual clips then they would on a membership site. Something that set me apart from everything was that I always made myself available to people by email and phone and even to this day my policy is simple – be available to everyone whenever you are needed and not only that but be quick about it. I think I set the standard to this day for many things… one thing is having a support team that answers people quickly, usually within minutes and the second thing is making sure people can speak directly to the owner. To this day nobody can come close to either of these things. I am still sole owner of the web site and I am still available to everyone 24/7.
How was the initial concept of the site greeted? Was it an overnight success with Producers signing up for studios or did it take some work to explain the concept and attract people to come and join you?
This was the hard part, trying to convince producers to not only provide me with their content but to trust me to pay them for what was sold. This took many months of emails and phone calls to dozens of producers. Some came on board right away, some said I was crazy and some took a little time to get them to see the potential they had with this new idea. Once they saw they could make money then the word of mouth spread like wildfire and before knew it people were coming to me asking if they could be a part of this new innovative idea.
(Other than your own) who was the first studio on Clips4Sale and are they still an active studio?
The first ever store was http://clips4sale.com/50 which was the one I ran and after that was http://clips4sale.com/51 which was Janet Mason who was also big in the foot fetish industry at the time. It appears she stopped selling content in 2012. Foot factory was next at http://clips4sale.com/52 and they stopped in 2014. Next was Tickle Central http://clips4sale.com/53 who was also the first store that was not just foot fetish. This opened the door to tickling, bondage, and many other fetishes. Fetish Fusion http://clips4sale.com/59 is still active to this day. Many people retire, change careers and move on so not everyone is going to stay for the long haul. One more thing about these new studios and that it allowed models to find new light and make more money. I believe Clips4Sale brought on a huge demand for models and I believe the industry took a big jump for those who were not professional porn stars but everyday guys and girls next door.
You went from a fetish producer, making and selling your own content to becoming the owner of a very large and successful fetish clip site almost overnight. On a personal level, was that difficult? Suddenly you had a lot more responsibility on your shoulders. Was that easy for you to handle and who, if anybody helped you along the way? What things have you learned about yourself in growing the Clips4Sale business over the years?
I think personally I am still who I was back then. I didn’t change much as far as my personality or the way I treat people. I was always a nice guy who always had a smile on his face and loved to make people laugh. The responsibility is much greater now that there are tens of thousands of people who rely on me to make sure things stay smooth. I work hard still and I also started a family during all this. Hearing from people that call me or email me about how they love the site and that its changed their lives makes me so very happy inside. This didn’t all start off to just make money but the idea was to make people happy with what they do. Create a job from nothing and love it and get paid for it. That’s the dream and it’s still alive and kicking. Along the way there were several people who came on board to help. Friends from back up in NJ where I am from, family members and new people I met along the way. I like to keep the environment happy and positive and try not to get stressed out about things. If there is a problem we can all solve it, so why get so stressed out if you have a good team of people around you. Some things I have learned about myself…..well patience…..you must be a patient person if you want to succeed at anything. I also learned to be a better communicator as well as public speaking. I never liked speaking in front of people but when I talk about C4S I love it and look forward to doing it. I have also learned to give back. I try to help people without wanting anything back, just the thought of giving to help someone buy a car, buy a house, pay medical bills for their kids or even just giving my time to people who need a friendly voice to reach out to. That is who I have become.
Naturally when you have a great idea, people tend to copy it. They do say the greatest compliment is imitation and there are now a few sites that have popped up trying to do a similar thing to Clips4Sale – but it did take them a while to show up on the scene. What do you think the fundamental difference is between Clips4Sale and these other copycat clip sites, and what keeps Clips4Sale out front as the industry leader?
I think at first I was a bit annoyed of sites that blatantly ripped the entire site and changed a few things to try to be different. It’s hard to respect someone that does that and most of them fail. They fail due to one major flaw – they only care about money. I noticed many copycat sites just put up a site and tell people to go out and work and we will sit around and collect the money for your hard work. Anyone can build a site but it takes a leader to go that extra mile and do what it takes to for example, buy a lot of traffic so that when people join you have a built in customer base waiting for them. Having a great support team that is fast and efficient. Still to this day I believe I am still the only clip site with one owner, not a corporation or a group of people who wanted to take the idea and do their version of it. Just me and my team. I don’t think any competitor will even allow you to speak to the owner or even email them. They stay in the background not wanting to be a part of it because as I said for them it’s only about the money. I think it’s very easy to take what we built and rebuild it today with more bells and whistles – that’s the easy part if you ask me. Doing right by your producers and customers is the real challenge. Gaining trust in people is very hard to do and I have built relationships with people that have lasted over 14yrs and growing. People know that I do what I say and that they can trust me 100% without question. People will spread rumors all day about whatever they wish and when we reply to the rumors with my direct phone number for people to call me to verify things well it shuts them right up. They know they were caught and they refuse to come face to face with me because they are simply only spewing hate and false stories to make them feel better inside. If anyone ever wants to know something they can call me anytime and get an answer. This is the way I like it and this is what makes C4S different than all the others. C4S is always growing. We go through growing pains, technical issues, and other things that require people to have that simple thing called patience. You will see how we will change with the times. It might not happen is one month or one year but slowly over time we will grow and make changes and stay on top.
Clips4Sale is now over ten years old. It has been hugely successful. But to continue that success you need to stay ahead of the game. As mentioned in the previous question the competition is growing and is gunning for you. That’s what happens when you are at the top of the tree. So what is next for Clips4Sale? How do you see the company growing? Clips4Sale was groundbreaking in its inception, how does C4S continue to break new ground and stay ahead of all its rivals? It’s a question I ask all the Producers I interview but how do you see the future of the fetish industry in general, and how do you see C4S in that picture?
I think the best part of competition is that they are actually fighting with one another, we do not look back we moved forward while these other sites bicker about things with each other. We are above all that but these other sites are not as experienced in this industry and fall into that social media battle ground. It’s best to not engage in this type of behavior but one day they will learn.
Something that many do not understand is this…..C4S is for everyone. We do not cater to a single group or focus only on certain things. It’s for all people to use and all people to be a part of. I think the other sites do not understand this and they get caught up in right now instead of the future.
C4S will grow over the next few years to include cams, in room viewing, memberships, customs, user accounts, mobile and streaming. Also better searching capabilities for users. I feel that searching to find what you want is at the top of the list and we are already working on several of these things and when people see we have a one stop shop for everything they need then there will be no reason to waste time with others.
We came out with many ideas that were never done before only to have others copy them which is fine. We will just keep coming up with more and let them keep copying from us :]
I see the future of this industry getting more and more popular. With all these ways the producers can earn income it’s only going to continue to grow at a nice, steady pace. The real issue honestly to all of us in the industry is free porn. This is what should unite us all with one common goal to try to make sure people pay for their porn. Too many people work hard for the content they produce only to have people watching it for free. It’s an eyesore on this industry and I hope something is done about it in the future.
In its creation and continued existence Clips4Sale has arguably done and continues to do more to support the amateur porn and fetish clip industry than anything else. In what other ways are you and C4S involved in the industry – i.e Event Sponsorships, Seminars, B2Bs etc. And Is C4S active in ways that people do not tend to know about?
We continue to sponsor trade shows as we have done for over 10 years as well as doing seminars to educate the models and producers on how and what to do in the industry and to be safe and work smarter not harder. We also work hard behind the scenes to help get their content removed from all those free sites out there. This is all free of charge to our hard working producers. We will also continue going to B2B shows and networking with other great people in this industry making relationships that will last a lifetime.
Another question I like to ask Producers, and it’s a fun one, what do you think you would be doing if you were not the owner of the biggest Amateur Fetish and Porn Clip Site on the web?
Wow, thats a good question and I often think about this and wonder myself… What would I be doing had I not taken the chance with C4S? Well I love animals and people and I do work hard so I am sure I would be doing something where I would be helping animals and or people. Either that or I would still be working doing sales on the road but honestly I didn’t like that much. I didn’t mind the people, it was all the driving and hotels and such. I think I would be a good idea man, bring me a problem and I will find a solution for you. Can you get paid for that?? Well if not maybe I would have started a website doing exactly that…lol.
Thanks for your time Neil. If there is anything else you’d like to mention in this interview please feel free to say it below.
I would just like to say thank you to everyone for making C4S the great site it is today. Everyone has a part in its success and from the bottom of my heart I wanted to say thank you and that I appreciate all of you. I am always and will always be available to everyone for any reason… big or small. Don’t be afraid to reach out to me, I won’t bite and I love hearing from you all. It’s actually funny, a lot of times when people call me they say, “I know I am a little guy and don’t mean anything to you and sorry for bothering you…” My answer is always the same, I don’t care if you make $10 or $100,000.00, you are important to me and you are never wasting my time. I will move mountains for you no matter if you’re brand new or been with C4S for 12 years, doesn’t matter to me……everyone is equally important to me :]
I can always be reached at 727-804-3005.
Thank you again for allowing me to express all of these things that have been waiting for so long to come out!
